Art and Design Narrative

At Bure Park Primary School, we value Art and Design as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum, demonstrated through our current journey towards achieving the Artsmark accreditation. Creativity is developed by inspiring our pupils to experiment, invent and create artworks through drawing, painting, sculpture, printing, textiles and digital art, following the Access Art curriculum framework. We encourage the importance of using a sketchbook to record their ideas as they invent and create. We also introduce our pupils to artwork by a range of artists, craft makers and designers and encourage them to discuss their response to the artworks. By providing the children with opportunities for reflection the children acquire the ability to make informed, appropriate and critical responses to their own work as well as the work of others.

We endeavour to provide a cross curricular approach to art lessons in a practical way and use this to develop our pupils’ art skills and knowledge. We encourage them to think about how art has affected (and still affects) the world around them. We believe it is a subject that encourages self-expression, can help develop confidence as well as a sense of individual identity. It is a subject that gives the children freedom to explore, build knowledge and refine skills that are developed throughout their art journey.
